Situated in the Nouth Lombok, Nouth Lombok, and Midle Lombok regency with 3.726 meters above the sea surface, Mount Rinjani is a potential geotourism. This volcano has a caldera panorama, a green Segara Anak lake, peak, crater, waterfall, hot spring, cave, history of explosion, and a new lava flow.
Mount Rinjani
Some mountain climber said that climbing mount Rinjani is “the five star tracking”. According to those who has climb this mountain said that if this mountain is a hotel, it is a top class hotel, a five star hotel. There are three official climbing tracks up to the peak. They are the Senaru and Torean tracks from the North Lombok, and the Sambalun track from the East Lombok regency.
Those three tracks has their own characteristics that detrmain the climbing objective. The most popular track and the mosly used by the foreign climber is the Senaru track. It is related to the easy acces to this site. In addition, this track has the same route with Senggigi beach. The Senaru village is the gate to this site. By taking this track we can enjoy other tourist object such as; the oldest Mosque in Lombok Island, The Bayan traditional village, and both Sendang Gile waterfall and Tiu Kelep waterfall.
There are tens of decent inns in this village. In addition, there are also some adequate climbing services. Nowadays, Mount Rinjani that become the part of the Mount Rinjani National Park is managed by an institution that involved the government, private, local people and some tourism people under the Rinjani Tracking Management Board (RTMB) name. Being managed by the RTMB, Rinjani rechieved some national and international award e.g the World Agency Award in 2004 and Tourism for tomorrow Awards (2006/2008).
Having a difficult track to climb, the tourist that visit mount Rinjani are the tpurist who has special interest. It takes 8 to 12 hours to reach the peak of this mountain both by using the Senaru or the Sembalun track. Located at 8º25” of altitude and 116º28” of latitude, this mountain becomes a favorite for the Indonesian climbers for its beautiful sceneray. Having about 41,330 acres wide, this mountain is situated in the Mount Rijani National Park.
The forest area in this mountain includes in the heterogen type, and also homogen type in some part of it. We can find the kinds of oak trees, Beringin (Ficus superb), Garu (Dysoxylum sp), Bajur, as well as the local farm area planted by vegetable such as potato, chili, cabage, and onion on 1000 to 2000 meters above the sea level height. We can find more mountain pine (Casuarina junghuniana) trees on about 2000 to 3000 meters above the sea level height. Up to the height of 3000 meters above the sea level we can find nothing but the grass family plants and the edelweiss, the eternal flower.
Segare Anak is the most exotic spot at mount Rinjani. Segare means ‘Sea’ and Anak means ‘a child’. This lake is formed vulkanicly by the explosion of mount Rinjani. The local named it segare or ‘sea’ because of its blue color of thje water, the saem as the sea. Located on 2800 meters above the sea level, there are some varians of fish and others flora and fauna live in it. The gold fish, the “mujaer”, and the harper are the dominant inhabitants of this lake. The water of Segara Anak has sulfuric smells, the temperature are different from one place to another.
Segara Anak is 1.100 accres wide, 160-230 deep. There is anew volcanic mountain in the center of this lake. It is an active volcano, and it grows bigger. The local believe that the water of Segara Anak merically cure deseases. Further, the local worship the benda-benda sakti here. There is a smlall new mountain named Gunung Baru jari (new mountain) near the Segara Anak Lake.
Altough there are a track to the peack of the mountain, few people could reach it. Probably it is because the mountain produce gas as it still grow. In adition to enjoying the scenery while fishing at the Segara Anak lake, you can explore some cane such as Pengantin cave (the Bride cave), Susu cave (the Milk cave), Manik cave, and its hot spring, or the local call it Aik Kalak in Sasak language.
